Get Involved: Object to the plans and help save the reserve

The planning application is now live on Aberdeenshire Council's website - add your thoughts and object by Wednesday July 22nd 2026

The planning application for the proposed golf development at the Waters of Philorth is now live, and members of the public can submit comments directly to Aberdeenshire Council.

Deadline: Wednesday 22 July 2026

Submitting an objection is one of the most important actions you can take to help protect the Waters of Philorth. Every comment becomes part of the planning process and helps demonstrate the strength of local feeling about the future of this unique natural space.

You do not need to be a planning expert. A short, personal objection explaining why this place matters to you and why you are concerned about the development can be incredibly powerful.

The Waters of Philorth is one of Fraserburgh's most important natural spaces. Every day, local people use the reserve for walking, dog exercise, wildlife watching and simply spending time outdoors. Its dunes, wetlands and open landscape provide a rare opportunity to experience nature close to home. Many residents are concerned that if this development goes ahead, part of this unique and much-loved place will be permanently lost.

What makes a strong objection?

The most effective objections are personal, honest and specific. Think about your own connection to the reserve and what concerns you most about the proposal.

You may wish to include:

  • Community Value

  • How long you or your family have used the reserve

  • What makes the Waters of Philorth special to you.

  • Why it is important that future generations can continue to enjoy this space.

  • The role the reserve plays in the everyday lives of local people.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

The Waters of Philorth is a Local Nature Reserve containing dunes, wetlands, reed beds and important wildlife habitats.

You may wish to comment on:

  • The potential impact on wildlife and biodiversity

  • The loss or disturbance of habitat.

  • The importance of protecting a natural environment that already supports a rich variety of species.

  • Concerns about introducing commercial development into a sensitive ecosystem.

Erosion and Flooding

Many regular visitors have observed significant changes to the landscape in recent years.

You may wish to mention:

  • Erosion of the dune system.

  • Changes to the riverbanks and river mouth.

  • Flooding concerns.

  • The challenges of building infrastructure in a landscape shaped by constantly changing coastal processes.

Construction Impacts

The effects of the development would begin long before the first round of golf is played.

You may wish to comment on:

  • The use of heavy machinery within a sensitive natural environment.

  • Construction of the proposed bridge and associated infrastructure.

  • Disturbance to wildlife during the building phase.

  • Increased noise, traffic and disruption.

Need for the Development

You may also wish to share your views on whether the development is necessary.

For example:

  • Fraserburgh and the surrounding area already have established golf courses.

  • Whether the claimed benefits outweigh the permanent impact on a Local Nature Reserve.

  • Whether this natural space should remain accessible and protected for the whole community.

A Few Tips

  • Explain why the reserve matters to you personally.

  • Include your own observations and experiences.

  • Focus on planning, environmental and community concerns.

  • Be polite and respectful.

Remember, you do not need to write pages and pages. A few well-written paragraphs explaining why you care about the Waters of Philorth can be just as effective as a lengthy submission.
